Scotland's tallest residential multi-storeys have been demolished

C&D Consultancy were recently confirmed as joint winners of the Collaboration in Demolition Award, and it was won due to the demolition of GHA's Whitevale and Bluevale flats in Glasgow’s Gallowgate. Also known as Scotland's tallest residential multi-storeys.

The contract was carried out by Safedem working with Despe and C&D. It used ‘TopDownWay’ technology, meaning full-height scaffolding was not required for the 31-storey buildings. Instead, a platform at the top of each building allows for a floor-by-floor demolition.

Commenting on the job, Safedem's managing director William Sinclair said:

"We carefully assess every project before developing the safest and most appropriate method of demolition. The ‘TopDownWay’ is an innovative system designed for the deconstruction of high-rise structures in close proximity to nearby properties.

This really has been a huge team effort to bring this new and exciting system to the UK and to the Gallowgate. We are delighted the exceptional teamwork on this project has resulted in winning the Collaboration Award."

C&D appointed CDM Co-ordinator for The Gallowgate Twins demolition

C&D are proud to announce that we have been appointed as CDM Co-ordinator and Demolition Consultants for the demolition of "The Gallowgate Twins," the tallest structures in Scotland. We will be working with Safedem and GHA on this complex demolition for the whole of 2015.

Total Reclaims Demolition is demolishing five 16 storey blocks in Nottingham

Total Reclaims Demolition is in the midst of a big contract job in Nottingham, which will see the company bring down five sets of 1960s 16-storey blocks of flats. The flats will be replaced by new council homes as part of an ongoing regeneration project.

The first of the blocks to come down is Lenton Court, and luckily for us the whole process was caught on camera. If you'd like to see how it progressed click on the link below as unfortunately there's no way to embed the video.

Blackpool's skyline is being changed forever

The skyline in Blackpool is currently being changed forever as the flats on Healey Street on Queens Park estate in Layton are being demolished.

Charles Court and Ashworth Court are the first two blocks to be demolished, and it signals the end of high rise flat living in the area. Instead, 22 houses and 72 two and three storey flats are set to be built in their place by developer Lovell.

Local residents who have lived in the flats for years are understandably upset about losing their homes, but on the plus side the new development is expected to benefit everyone. Gwen King, chairman of the Queens Park Residents Association, said:

"People are now looking for a lot more and I think a lot of people are glad to see the flats go. We are going to get warm flats, double glazed and everyone will benefit from it."

Safedem implodes 25-storey block of flats in Glasgow

Safedem has successfully completed the demolition of a 25-storey block of flats in Roystonhill, north Glasgow, which have been standing since 1968.

The implosion can be watched above and used 40kg of explosives to bring the block down in just 5 seconds. The clean up operation involving the removal of 10,000 tonnes of debris will be completed by the middle of 2014.

The demolition was greenlit by the Glasgow Housing Association, which has already invested £1.3 billion regenerating the area and housing across the entire city. In place of these flats 100 new homes will be built as well as around 300 more homes planned for the Sighthill and Barmulloch areas of the city.

C&D customer Coleman & Co bring down Gorbals towerblocks

Yesterday when some of us were having a lie in Coleman & Co were hard at work evacuating residents, setting exclusion zones and commencing a countdown to bring down two Gorbals towerblocks. The demolition, with explosives work by John Turner of Robinson & Birdsell, was the latest in a long line of Glasgow explosive contracts that are slowly clearing the Glasgow skyline of redundant tower blocks.

We at C&D were not involved in this blast but, like all fans of blow downs, we followed the events live via the twitter feed and were delighted to see that it all went without a hitch.

Glasgow Housing Association select 3 demolition contractors

The Glasgow Housing Association has selected three demolition contractors to carry out major demolition work between now and 2017. The three contractors and the value of the work assigned to them is as follows:

• Safedem - £4.7 million
• Technical Demolition Services - £4.1 million
• Dem-Master - £1.1 million

Seven companies were in the running for the work, but the three that won already have proven track records working with the association.

The good news now is how much of a difference the contracted work will make to the Glasgow skyline. In total, many high rise flats will be demolished, over 2,000 flats will go, and a further 250 low rise flats are also earmarked for removal, ready for land redevelopment.

Glencairn Tower to fall November 20th

The date has been set for the 1964, 17 storey Glencairn Tower to fall. On November 20th Technical Demolition Services will drop the flats from the skyline of Motherwell and bring to an end a project whose costs have escalated.

The original contract price was £703,400, but the survey carried out failed to identify asbestos throughout the tower adding a further £380,000. Scottish Power has also submitted a bill for £87,400 due to a need to re-route a power cable.

No details have been made available as to exactly when the demolition will occur, but we hope cameras will be setup to capture the event.

DSM Demolition win £961,000 Dublin flats demolition contract

DSM Demolition has just secured the contract for a large demolition job in Dublin that's reported to be worth in the region of 1.1 million Euros, or £961,000.

The project involves the demolition of a nine storey block of flats consisting of 96 flats in total. The building is constructed from precast concrete walls and insitu concrete floors. The work will involve soft stripping, removal of any hazardous waste from the site, and demolishing all that concrete.

Earlier this year DSM demolished two towers at Aston University with the aid of PDC Explosives Engineers. You can view video footage of the blowdown here.
